Energy Boost

During the world’s current climate, pandemic, politics and all, I found it undoubtedly easy to sink low into feelings within myself and my relationships. With all that extra time at home, how couldn’t I? Every other day I would feel unsure or lethargic, hoping to break out of my funk any minute. Some days I would rather quickly, but other days it would last as long as a few days.

Instead of acting on the mood, I embraced it, but not in the good kind of way. No, instead I allowed it to consume me, piece by piece. More often than not, I would stay quiet about how I felt, keeping my darkest moments all to myself. I would do that as if I didn’t already know that, eventually, shit would hit the fan as it always does. Next thing I knew, I would be bawling my eyes out to either my sister, mom, or fiancé.

So what do I do in these moments or days? What energy boosts can I conjure to show me a brighter side to the quarantined life?

You would think, as I am writing this, that writing would have been one of my go-to energy boosters, but that is far from the truth. My lethargy ran so high that I was touching the tallest mountain of apathy. My desires plummeted, but soon I figured out a few boosters that would preserver even the lowest of days.

  1. Playing LOUD music — the kind you want to belt out
  2. Dancing obnoxiously to that loud music
  3. Finding an exciting new recipe to tackle
  4. Combining steps 1–3 all at once

Once I’ve reached step 4, then step 5 became a whole lot easier…

5. Acknowledging and talking about feelings (even if you think it’s annoying)

Talking about these things, whether to a therapist, family member, spouse, or best friend is important. Something I have learned over this uncertain time period is that when we look at the bigger picture, our problems tend to be a lot smaller than we once thought, and that’s a good thing.

So if you take anything from this piece, I hope it’s to dance and sing it out. Find your energy boost to release any stress and worry that you’ve been bottling in so tight. Once you find yours, remember it and repeat it. Those energy boosters will collectively help us and remind us to practice gratitude for all moments, good and bad. The good thing is, the bad never lasts too long.
